World Vision Bangladesh, an international development agency, has provided cash assistance of around Tk 6.5 crore to the poor and unemployed people across the country to stand by the helpless people in the coronal situation. 164 families were given this cash. This will enable the government to meet the immediate needs of low-income people who have been in crisis for more than two months due to the lockdown.

The corona virus has brought indescribable hardship to many families, such as Laboni, 26, of Dhaka. Laboni, a mother of three daughters aged 8, 9 and 11, earns Rs 4,000 a month by working as a carpenter. But he lost Karen’s job in the lockdown. Laboni said, “Even though my income is very low, our family would have somehow survived with this little money.” This has been going on for 5 years since her husband left. But I had a hard time in the last three months. I couldn’t find work anywhere else so it was very difficult for the children to get food twice a day. World Vision saved our lives too. I got Rs 5,000 through bKash. Through which I can now pay the arrears. Besides, some fish and meat can also be bought and fed for the girls. Now I have left a little half and survived. ‘

Sagar Marandi, director of World Vision Bangladesh’s Kovid-19 response program, said children in such crises are most at risk from issues such as abuse and exploitation when they need emotional help. Past experience, such as the Ebola epidemic, has shown that having a classroom bio increases the incidence of domestic violence against children, especially physical and sexual violence, child marriage, and psychological abuse.

Like Laboni, 216 urban households received Rs 5,000 and 16,518 rural households received cash assistance of Rs 3,000.

Sagar Marandi further said, “As a complement to the efforts of the Government of Bangladesh to prevent Covid-19 infection, in April this year, World Vision adopted the Covid-19 response program at the national level with the aim of providing life-saving equipment, services and information to the people. World Vision works with the most neglected and poorest sections of society to improve the quality of life of their children. The spread of Covid-19 has had a very negative impact on the lives and livelihoods of these neglected people. The COVID-19 response program is being implemented in the World Vision Action Area in 24 districts of the country through which the needs of children, people with disabilities, women and children are being given utmost importance. We have worked closely with the local government to select the beneficiaries. ”

Assistance to the beneficiary’s mobile bank account goes directly through a bank in collaboration with a mobile banking service provider. This service is reaching safely and efficiently in just 2/3 days.

“The whole process of transferring money from beneficiary selection is done digitally through various softwares. First, World Vision ordered the bank to pay, then the money went to the mobile banking service provider, ”said Sagar Marandi.
