The British government is also considering releasing some prisoners from prisons due to the epidemic. The international human rights group Amnesty International has also called for the “immediate” release of prisoners who are elderly and have a variety of health problems.

Meanwhile, the jail authorities want the release of those convicted of minor offenses as well as those who have already completed 20 years of imprisonment under Section 579 to be given priority. This section contains the names of 1,420 people, including those sentenced to life imprisonment in murder cases.

Three senior prison officials said that under Section 579 of the Penal Code, if a prisoner served two-thirds of his sentence, the government could release him with special benefits if there were no charges against him. No approval of the President is required for this. A list of prisoners from all the prisons in the country has been compiled in the last few years for the release of this facility. The names are finalized based on the age of the detainees, the type of punishment, the duration, the physical condition and whether they have committed any crime in prison. That list is sent to the Ministry of Law for vetting. Then it will be sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. The prisoner is released at any time with the approval of the Prime Minister.

Prison authorities say that if the list of prisoners who have been sentenced to 20 years in prison is not taken into account, there could be a mutiny. So they will request the Home Minister to consider the matter.

Officials in charge of the home ministry told Prothom Alo that a list had been sent to them last December. But these corona infections are not in front. They send these lists regularly.
