Bangladesh Urged to Align Renewable Energy Goals with Ground Realities

Climate activist Harjeet SinghClimate activist Harjeet Singh recently met with the South Asian Climate Change Journalist Forum (SACCJF) in Dhaka to discuss Bangladesh’s renewable energy goals. Singh, a leading advocate for climate finance and fossil fuel non-proliferation, emphasized the need for energy transition to be practical and tailored to the country’s unique socio-economic landscape.

During the meeting, he underscored the importance of ensuring that renewable energy targets are not just aspirational but are firmly grounded in the nation’s realities. Singh highlighted that a successful transition requires inclusive planning, regional collaboration, and technology transfer to avoid leaving marginalized communities behind. He also cautioned against relying on loans from multilateral development banks for climate finance, as this can create an additional burden on vulnerable countries.

The SACCJF, represented by its Executive President Assaduzzaman Shamrat, agreed that public awareness and accountability are essential for a smooth energy transition. Shamrat noted that journalists have a critical role in educating the public on what is achievable, the challenges involved, and how energy policies affect daily life.

The discussion concluded with a shared commitment to evidence-based reporting and a focus on the practical implementation of renewable energy projects in Bangladesh. The meeting was attended by other key members of SACCJF, including Karamot Ullah Biplob, Masum Billah, and other executive committee members
